As part of the force’s digital policing strategy, Durham Police have introduced a new innovative software solution that allows officers to work much more efficiently than ever before.

Durham Police now have the tools to conduct witness and victim statements over the telephone with the public as part of a suite of software tools provided by SentrySIS under Durham Police’s Digital Justice programme.

The new software eliminates the need for the police to meet the public in person when investigating low level crime. This means that officers can conduct statements over the telephone at times more convenient to the public.

SentrySIS Strategic Lead at Durham Police, Detective Superintendent Kevin Weir commented and said “Durham Police have always been forward thinking when it comes to the technology we have at our disposal which ultimately improves the service we offer to the public. As a force, we have taken the view that this technology not only offers additional support mechanisms to our officers whilst carrying out their day to day duties but allows the public to interact with the police in a much more modern and efficient way.”

Since the introduction of the software across the police force area in October 2017, there have been over 2000 telephone statements conducted. This has allowed officers to spend their time much more efficiently as travel time and face to face assistance have been reduced or eradicated completely, giving them more time to investigate other crimes.

The technology within the new software also allows the public to digitally sign the statement in a secure manner and transfer any digital media such as CCTV directly to the police to assist in their investigations.

Chris Nriapia from SentrySIS commented on the new software and said “The remote telephone statement software by SentrySIS has allowed the police to work in a totally different way than before. Not only does it provide them with the latest technology to carry out their investigation processes more robustly, but offer the public flexibility around when they have time to give a statement to the police by simply picking up the phone”.

The remote telephone statement software forms part of a wider suite of police specific software tools by SentrySIS that offer police constabularies and their partners a series of cost and efficiency saving benefits.
